We Take Environmental Responsibility Seriously

On this page you will find examples of our projects and investments in sustainable packaging, production and delivery.

Environmentally Friendly Packaging

We focus on recycling and reuse when it comes to our packaging. Used cardboard boxes are reused for shipping or as filling material. The packaging for our knives and spatulas is gradually being changed from plastic to environmentally friendly recycled cardboard.

Electric Vehicle Fleet

Our vehicles are powered by self-generated electricity from our own solar system. Their range and efficiency are perfectly suited to our day-to-day operations. This not only reduces costs, but also helps protect the environment through emission-free driving.

Electricity from Our Own Production

A positive environmental footprint starts with renewable energy. We generate electricity for production, administration and local transport using our large-scale solar system.

Sustainable Products

Sustainability also plays an important role in our own product range. The handles of the knives and spatulas in our LIGNUM series are made from 80% renewable raw materials. A clear benefit for the environment!

Our Environmentally Friendly Packaging

The growing amount of plastic waste has become a major problem for our environment and increasingly also for human health. Only around 20 to 30% of plastic waste is recycled, while large quantities end up in the oceans or in nature. Microplastics have even been detected in the human body.

Plastic is a durable and versatile material – but as disposable packaging and single-use waste, it clearly becomes a problem.

That is why we want to make the packaging of our products more environmentally friendly. Starting this year, the packaging units for our knives and spatulas will gradually be changed to protective sleeves and outer packaging made from recycled cardboard.

This improves the environmental footprint of our packaging in several ways: unlike plastic, cardboard decomposes naturally and is significantly less harmful as a waste product. The recycled cardboard we use is made from recovered waste paper and therefore already part of the recycling cycle. In addition, our new cardboard packaging is sourced from a local manufacturer, helping us avoid long and environmentally harmful transport routes.

  • A Look at Our Company

Full of Energy for a Sustainable Future

Green Energy Drives Us…

For us, electric mobility is an essential step towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly future as well as an important part of our company philosophy. Since November 2014, we have used a fully electric delivery vehicle for all local journeys to suppliers, customers and postal services. In October 2021, our Nissan eNV200 was replaced by an Opel Vivaro-e, offering enough cargo space for two Euro pallets – making even larger deliveries easy to handle.

Whenever necessary, the vehicle is charged with green electricity at one of our two charging stations. Although vans are not designed for long-distance travel due to their aerodynamics, the battery still provides more than enough range for local deliveries.

We have also been using fully electric company cars since the beginning of 2019. Modern battery ranges of 300 to 500 km per charge are perfectly practical for everyday use, and Germany’s continuously expanding fast-charging network also allows us to travel comfortably to trade fairs and customer appointments.

This enables us to travel quietly and emission-free while remaining independent of fossil fuels and rising fuel prices.

…and Our Company

Since moving into our new company headquarters in February 2013, one of our goals has been to improve the sustainability of our business through our own facilities. The first step was the construction and refurbishment of existing buildings according to the latest energy-efficiency standards.

In summer 2014, we installed a large-scale photovoltaic system across four rooftops. Originally intended mainly to supply electricity for the charging station of our delivery vehicle, it quickly became clear that the system’s total output of 51 kilowatt peak could not be fully utilised for that purpose alone. On long, sunny days, our solar panels generate enough energy to power the entire operation – including machinery, offices, air conditioning and vehicles.

This means the investment pays for itself quickly while also supporting our sustainability goals. The next step in our environmental strategy is the installation of an energy storage system, allowing us to use our self-generated solar power even during darker hours.

Sustainable Products

Sustainability is not only important to us when it comes to packaging, energy supply and mobility – we also carefully consider the materials used in our products.

That is why we developed our new “Lignum” knife and spatula series in 2015. The handle material is made from 80% renewable raw materials, helping to conserve natural resources and reduce the use of fossil-based materials.

Our goal was to meet the strict hygiene requirements for food-service products while also achieving a natural appearance.

With Lignum, we offer a knife series with a wood-look handle that fulfils these requirements perfectly. Whether with an injection-moulded handle or a premium riveted plastic handle, Lignum products are dishwasher-safe while offering the look and feel of real wood.

Looking Ahead – Our Contribution to the Future

Emil Schmidt ist Entrepreneur for Future

We support “Entrepreneurs for Future” because, like more than 2,000 other companies, we are convinced that climate protection and responsible business practices belong together. Politicians and governments must create clear framework conditions so that climate-friendly technologies and sustainable business models can succeed under fair competitive conditions.

In addition to our self-generated solar power and electric vehicle fleet, we have successfully converted the packaging of most of our products to recycled cardboard. In this way, we continuously improve the environmental footprint of our products and packaging while reducing the use of plastics wherever possible.
